The Danger in Action Shots

Extending your skills – safely (Action shots Pt 3)

I am going to take you on a ride over the next few posts. We will be looking at some techniques to extend your skills with action shots. For now I include two videos. They are fun – you just have to laugh otherwise you would cry. However, they serve as a reminder that action shots can be dangerous. You should be aware that you and your camera can be in harms way. Enjoy these, but watch yourself!

To Crop or Not to Crop… That is the Question

An example of an image used where the crop has a significant impact

An example of an image used where the crop has a significant impact. This is a header from this website. The image is cropped specifically because of the content. The shape of the crop is also a design element in its context.

Cropping is not a simple decision

When we take a picture we may well decide that although the capture is good, we will need to crop the shape of the picture later. Cropping, the act of cutting a picture shape for a specific purpose, is something all photographers wrestle with at some point. In fact it is quite an involved subject.

The image of the peppercorns in the site header was taken using a macro lens. As a result the picture was cropped wide and thin to cut out the bokeh on either side of the depth of field. However, as you can see from the placement of the picture it is also a strong element of the page design and so it had a specific crop to suit that situation too.

Our new entry into the photographic glossary today is a detailed article…
Definition: Crop; Cropping; Cropped;

Shutter Speed Exposed!

There are plenty of reasons to understand shutter speed better. It is an important controller of many aspects of the composition of our photographs. When things are moving fast we can fix them – capture the speed of the moment. And, when things are moving slowly the camera can make them look fast. And, when we are interpreting movement in our image we can inject a little blur and make it look like our image has movement just like the real world. Shutter speed is one of the three main aspects of exposure along with ISO and Aperture. Shutter speed is about our exposures.

Today we have published a new entry in our Photographic Glossary… Shutter Speed
