The camera shutter – the mechanism that controls the time the sensor is exposed to the light

The shutter itself is the part of the camera that opens or shuts to let in light. However, it is not the sole controller of the amount of light getting into the camera. Aside from the lens cap (grin) what is the main mechanical feature of a lens that controls the amount of light coming into the camera? Answers on a comment below. No prizes, just kudos!
