Definition: Fill-in Flash; Fill-in Light; Fill; Fill Light

The use of strong lights and bright sunlight is almost inevitably going to cause some dark shadows. Strong, hard light creates harsh shadows and sharply defined shadow lines. These are unflattering, creating angular face lines and harsh areas of the scene. It is natural to want to relieve this tension in the composition. The use of fill-in Flash, or fill light is to help fill out those dark places and harsh shadows. More about Fill-in Flash; Fill-in Light; Fill; Fill Light in the “Photographic Glossary”.

Definition posted: Flash; Pop-up Flash

When using the ‘auto’ mode the on-board light meter in a DSLR is set to trigger the pop-up flash. It will spring up when the light conditions are too low for an optimal exposure to be created. After this the flash will fire each time the picture would under-expose without it. Today we have put a new entry to cover this in the Photographic Glossary. See: Pop-up Flash; “Cobra” Flash; Flip-up Flash.
