Diaphragm shutter

A diaphragm shutter is an old type of shutter that was mounted on the Definition: Diaphragm; Iris diaphragm of a photographic lens or a similar diaphragm built for it. It is a legacy system that was not widely implemented in the SLR (film). It is not normally found in modern DSLRs or their modern lenses.

A diaphragm shutter is constructed from thin blades which briefly uncover the aperture to make the exposure. The blades slide over each other in a similar way to the iris and creates a circular aperture which rapidly enlarges to reveal the lens, stays open for the required time, then closes.
